Peter Gray QC is back one year on with an update on prosecution and sentencing of companies, the increasing use of existing powers to prosecute directors and criminal liability of companies and directors in relation to fatal road traffic and construction accidents. This is an excellent opportunity to bring directors and other key management staff to hear about the risk of failing to comply and the consequences in event of conviction.
On the 17th February at 2pm, SHEF(S) were very pleased to announce Roger Bibbings, RoSPA's Occupational Safety Adviser presented on Occupational Road Risk. RoSPA has long campaigned for organisations to adopt a proactive risk management approach to reducing the risks connected with 'at work' vehicle use, tackling this issue within the framework which they will already have in place for managing health and safety at work. Roger continues to be involved in helping to establish a national strategy on MORR, including the development of the recent HSE/DFT guidance 'Driving at Work - managing work-related road safety', for employers on their duties to manage risk on the road under the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.
Following on from Rogers presentation, Dr Karen McDonnell, Head of RoSPA Scotland, discussed the benefits of being a member of ScORSA. The Scottish Occupational Road Safety Alliance (ScORSA) was created to raise awareness of the management of occupational road risk (MORR) and to promote occupational road safety to companies within Scotland. This unique initiative is an online website which provides an information hub for businesses and signposts companies to information, resources and free practical support to promote MORR within their organisation. As businesses and drivers become more aware of their responsibilities, this will have a tremendous impact in reducing road casualty figures in Scotland.
SHEF(S) are pleased to announce winning the Alan Butler Award for Best Communication, for the second year. Committee members went to the House of Lords to be presented with the award on the 25th January. Photographs are available on our facebook page.

SHEF(S) are very pleased to announce that Keith Scott, Chair of IIRSM and Group Head of Safety at Royal Mail will be speaking on Safety Leadership at Novembers meeting. Leadership is required at all levels within an organization and never more so than by safety professionals. Safety professionals practising at the higher levels in larger organizations need more than just health and safety qualifications and practical safety skills. They need the management skills that will enable them to become safety leaders in their own right and influence chief executives and senior managers. This presentation will help experienced safety practitioners identify the areas for personal development and where they need to refresh their 'soft' management skills to improve their safety leadership delivery.
October sees another joint event, this time with Construction Skills, held at Reid Kerr College. Students from Reid Kerr will be visiting the M74 Project in the morning and joining us at our meeting in Reid Kerr College at 2pm. Jim Stewart (Construction Skills) and Gerry McCulloch (HSE) will be giving presentations to the forum and students. Please come along and support a future generation of workers and help encourage a safer attitude among them.
